Chinatown, Chinatown!

Thursday 26 January 2006

I was at Chinatown yesterday with Shane and Mommy Alison. I wanted to show Shane some of the customs and traditions of what we Chinese do to welcome the new lunar year.

When I was a kid, I look forward to this day, where I have pretty frocks to wear and marvelicious cakes and goodies to savour. And, soft drinks all day long!! I was totally out of control! That was when I started cultivating a taste for Schweppes Ginger Beer (in case you are unaware, there's absolutely no alcohol content!)

Now that I have my 'alcohol-drinking' license, I turned it into delicious cocktails. Here's two recipes I found:

The Dark And Stormy:
50ml dark rum
Schweppes Ginger Beer top
1 lime quartered and squeezed

Build all ingredients in a highball glass filled with ice. Serve with two straws.

The Moscow Mule:
50ml Vodka
Schweppes Ginger Beer top
Dash of Cassis
1 lime quartered and squeezed

Build all ingredients in a highball filled with ice. Serve with two straws.

Oh, how can I forget those red packets? I was the recipient of those powerful new purple, red and blue notes until five years back. Ouucchhh, I feel the pinch now and my face is turning a ray of colours. . . =)

But I do find joy in shopping for new year goodies and decorating my house though. But this year, I have to constantly remind myself not to overbuy. You see, I have the habit of buying a lot A LOT and ended up throwing most away coz they would have expired by the time I was ready to eat them. Yes, that's me, an impulsive buyer! In fact, I have a bad habit of suffocating my fridge with too much food and most of them suffered the same fate like those expired new year goodies =(

Know what, I didn't know there's a wet market @ Chinatown! Now I know where else to get Shane's favourite Cod Fish! They all looked so fresh and nice. And plenty of fruits! I love FRUITS!!

Btw, I'm a Cantonese, and people used to tell me that Cantonese love soups and most of their meals must be accompanied by soup. This is so true for me. Some people also said that the Cantonese made the best soups too!! At least I like to think I am!! Here's some of the side ingredients I used in my soup.

Some of the common items we can find in most home on lunar new year:

Here's my goodies corner:

I was rewarded with a kiss at the end of our tour...

A tired Shane and a super-tired-make-up-melted me!

That evening when we got home, Shane insisted on riding his new bike @ the playground. Look at how happy he was!!

Started as per normal.

Sent Shane to school.

Sent myself to work.

Picked Shane @ 2pm.

Went home to pack.

Sent Shane to his mama's (his paternal grandma, aka my ex-mom-in-law) office.

Yes, I am still keeping in touch with my former parents-in-law. In a way, they are still very much part of my other 'family' and I'll try to see them once a while. In fact, we used to live together before the separation. I got along very well with them and I enjoyed having them with me.

Chatted with 'Mom' for a while. Halfway through our chat, she mentioned to me she read about my horoscope somewhere that I'm very independent. And 'Mom' agreed 100% to this statement.

Independence. Do you think it's good or is it another curse?

A bit of both I think.

I admit being somewhat independent but to be honest I don't enjoy it 100%. It makes me 'alone'. Guess that's the price to pay.

Anyway, went to Johnson's wedding dinner at night. Johnson is my bestest pal Fen's brother. Ohhh... I enjoyed wedding!! Maybe it's because I don't get to have one myself so I enjoyed going to others. Now that you know, invite me to your wedding next time! =)

After dinner, met up with my next bestest pal Rita!! Man, haven't seen her for ages! She is, as always so gorgeous. Were at the Ying Yang Party @ Indochine, dress gear: Oriental Chic.

See how chic she is?

Need more drinks?

Mr. Chinatown getting hyper!!

And now, who says I don't like my right profile?? =D

And one guy seated at the next table at lunch today asked me whether I am Malay or Chinese.

LOL. I am Chinese but since young, I've being mistaken for: mostly Malay, next is Thai, Filipino, Japanese and listen to this ==> Vietnamese!! The last was a little puzzling though. I can't comprehend that. I feel most Vietnamese girls have this sweet, soft and demure look and please lah, I don't think any of the adjectives suits me!

It was often a family joke that I was picked up from the trash can outside my home coz I am the only one in the family that got mistaken by everybody else to be anything but Chinese! But for self-consolation, my grandma is half thai, so perhaps that's where I picked up my genes from!

But the funniest was a Chinese man actually asked me for road directions in Bahasa Melayu back home!! That happened many times although not all asked for road directions lah!!

Maybe I have a multi-racial face =)

I'm A Narcissist And I'm Proud Of It!!

One Nite In Bangkok!

Tuesday 10 January 2006

No no no, make it THREE!!

I luuurrrvveeee Bangkok!

But it's great to be back home too, really, although I know I will miss my Phad Thai, my orange juices (they don't call me Juicy for nothing, u know) and the pretty masseuses @ Issey.. ahhh too much lychee martinis that I'm turning into a lesbo?.. or so I thought!

I don't need to re-introduce Bangkok to you, do I? Most of you would have known by now all the great places to eat, shop, the good old Chatuchak market, massage, facial, clubbing, local thai pubs, whoring...Ooppss!!

Becks wanted to watch some Ping-Pong show but somehow, he didn't manage to catch that. It was his first trip to Thailand, naturally he was very curious about most things. In fact, I haven't seen it myself either! Maybe next trip when I have more time.

On the second nite, met up with Ben after the dinner @ Baan Kanitha. He brought us to Lipstick Bar..after much persuasion from me and Babe, a ladies club where you get only male hostesses!! Wow.. what an eye opener!! Though nothing much happened except you get to see them in shower (check out Surferbabe's blog for the shower pic). And no, I did not bring any of the male hostesses back to the hotel with me although I was being offered. How much do you think it will cost me? Nay, I didn't ask.

Back @ Vertigo for drinks. Vertigo is at Banyan Tree. Stayed there twice, the last with Shane and he LOVED it! Well, he got special attention from everyone, and he charmed all to do his little biddings!

Vertigo is unlike any other bar-cum-restaurant in the world: it is 62 floors (if you count the flight of stairs you need to take) above the streets of Bangkok with an open-air rooftop lounge and somehow the moon seemed bigger and brighter the nite I was there! The place used to be a helicopter landing pad. I always felt a little dizzy whenever I was there, perhaps the air was thinner. It's only open for dinner though but you can also just go to Moon Bar for drinks. It is very breezy up there and can get pretty chilly, so grab your jacket or shawl. And rather romantic too... gosh, I spent one pretty evening with two of the most gorgeous guys!!

Hey, I went Go-Karting too!! First time in my life! @ PTT Speed-way (31/11 RCA Plaza, Soi Soonvijai, Rama 9 Road). Paid 1400 baht for 4 races - 10 mins each.

For someone who has no driving licence, I must say I did pretty well, although Audrey labelled me Road Hazard No.2! Well, my crime was ==> I spun someone's kart 180 degree and crashed into another, TWICE! and I crashed into the wall too!! Tell me, how good was that for a starter huh?! I think the lady I spun round was from Singapore, and so hey lady, if you happen to pass by this blog, go ahead and lash me out. I was shocked beyond words when I spun you around. Truly sorry and truly unintentional!!

I soon learnt from Audrey that Go-Karting is not the same as BUMPER car and we were not suppose to bump each other! =P

But I tell you, this was one hell of an experience. It really drained my energy that night and the next day, I was so tired that I slept all the way till lunch!! And I walked around like an old lady with my whole body aching that I was sure no amount of massage could help me!

Okay, time for some nice shots..although some are not-so-very-nice!!

Btw, do you know Becks was even hotter than the male hostesses there? The ladies from the next table tried to 'hook' him but of course, they failed! Becks just refused to go and sit with them, else, I would have made a quick 1000 baht for my next massage!

*wink*
